Dr. Berry was recognized in the category of Research & Development for his contribution to the development of NCC/CNC, a high-value nanomaterial that can improve the performance of existing products and enable the development of new ones. NCC/CNC can be economically extracted from wood fiber and improves the strength, durability and toughness of products. It can reduce damage caused by wear, abrasion and light, and has antioxidant properties. Abundant, natural, renewable, recyclable, compostable and biodegradable, NCC/CNC is expected to become a major contributor to the green economy in numerous industrial sectors in the coming decades.
‘'It is an honour to receive this recognition for work that has been done by remarkable teams at FPInnovations, Domtar and now CelluForce," said Dr. Berry. "Being selected by Canada's Clean50 is a well-deserved honour for Dr. Berry, and we congratulate him on this achievement," said Jean Moreau, CEO, CelluForce. "Dr. Berry's initiatives over the past four years have helped to convince industrial and government stakeholders of the huge industrial potential of NCC/CNC, enabling Canada to bring NCC/CNC research from university and industry laboratories into an industrial and commercial reality. This has strengthened Québec and Canada's position as world leaders in innovation in the forestry industry. We are honored to have Dr. Berry on our team."
"These exceptional Clean50 honourees have not only succeeded in identifying opportunities for innovation and improvements, they have actually delivered them, in many instances giving their organizations strategic advantages over their competitors, while also delivering a net benefit for the planet," said Gavin Pitchford, Chief Talent Officer, Delta Management Group, and Founder of Canada's Clean50 Awards. "Add up the accomplishments of the Clean50-the individuals and organizations they represent-and you see a massive investment in a better way of doing business. All Canadians will reap the benefits."
Over 500 nominations were received, and the results of the national search will be published in a special supplement by Corporate Knights.
Media are invited to attend the Clean50 Summit (day) or awards ceremony (evening) on Wednesday, September 19, 2012.
