BATON ROUGE, LA, June 9, 2010 (The Advocate ) -Georgia-Pacific's Port Hudson mill could win a $230 million expansion and more than 40 new jobs if the Zachary-area plant beats competition within its own company.

The 1,100-acre mill off U.S. 61 completed a roughly $200 million energy-saving project three years ago and now employs nearly 1,000. Plant officials see the new project, which would make higher-quality tissue paper, as a further boost to the mill's viability.

With the expansion, the Port Hudson annual payroll would approach $75 million.
