FRANKFORT, KY, Aug. 11, 2010 (Press Release) -Gov. Steve Beshear today announced the expansion of SCA's North American Personal Care operations in Bowling Green. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held today at the Bowling Green plant among state, local and company officials to celebrate the expansion, which entails a $50 million investment and the creation of up to 65 new full-time positions over the coming years. SCA's Bowling Green manufacturing operation currently employs 180 Kentuckians.
"The expansion of SCA is an excellent example of how state and local governments can work together as partners with our existing industries to invest in the future of Kentuckians," said Gov. Beshear. "SCA's $50 million investment will create as many as 65 new, well-paying, full-time jobs with excellent benefits, providing a tremendous economic boost to the entire South Central Kentucky region."
SCA's North American Personal Care division manufactures the global-leading TENA® line of adult incontinence care products for the retail and healthcare institutional markets. Locally, TENA® products are sold at Wal-Mart, Walgreens and CVS, as well as other retailers and used by local nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The expansion adds 89,000 square feet to SCA's Bowling Green plant, located at 7030 Louisville Road, for a total of 459,000 square feet.
"This project includes both the expansion of an existing manufacturing line and the introduction of new manufacturing capabilities," said Sune Lundin, president of SCA Americas. "Part of the project will allow SCA to begin manufacturing products in Bowling Green that we have been importing from Europe. The new incontinence products produced in Bowling Green as a result of the expansion will be sold in retail outlets and to healthcare facilities across the United States and Canada."
One piece of the expansion project includes a manufacturing partnership with Japanese company Unicharm, building on an existing relationship SCA has with Unicharm in Europe.
"We are very pleased and excited to partner with SCA to bring our first United States manufacturing project to Bowling Green," said Takahisa Takahara, president and CEO of Unicharm. "The people working here are outstanding and I am fully convinced that they will demonstrate a commitment to the success of this project in the world's largest and most competitive incontinence care market."
The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority preliminarily approved SCA for tax incentives up to $1,625,000 through the Kentucky Industrial Development Act. The incentive can be earned by SCA over a 10 year-period.
Located in Bowling Green since 1988, SCA was awarded the 2009 Outstanding Business of the Year by the Christian Family Radio as part of their Community Impact Awards of Southern Kentucky.
"We are very excited to announce SCA's expansion today," said Bowling Green Mayor Elaine Walker. "SCA has been a loyal and supportive corporate citizen, one that is committed to protecting our environment through its sustainability efforts, and we thank them for continuing this partnership."
"We're always appreciative of our industries in South Central Kentucky," said Warren County Judge Executive Michael Buchanon. "SCA's expansion demonstrates that our region is a great place to do business, and we're eager to watch the company grow."
"The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce congratulates SCA on their expansion, and we look forward to assisting them with any of their needs. We extend a hearty ‘thank you' for their support of our local economy," said Chamber Board of Directors Chairman Joe Natcher.
"We make our TENA® incontinence products with an enormous level of care and compassion for the people who use them.
