Roll maintenance with remote conditioning

  • The level of support pays back in performance

Valmet offers combined roll maintenance and remote conditioning services within one full-scope roll service agreement for mills in the pulp and paper industries. Results can be seen in improved performance. When using remote conditioning, problems can be detected before they develop into machine failures. Mills save money by having fewer unplanned shutdowns, and better availability and longer lifetimes for their rolls.

By entering a full-scope roll service agreement pulp, paper, board and tissue mills can leave the overall responsibility for their roll maintenance and workshop operations to Valmet. This means that Valmet takes the full charge of the mills’ roll availability. For instance, Valmet is responsible for the roll management and maintenance operations, as well as for technical support and developing the roll maintenance services. This includes planning the annual shutdowns, executing the schedules and budgets for the roll changes, as well as on-site and off-site service operations.

One plus one is more than two

As part of its roll services, Valmet combines the roll maintenance and remote conditioning services within one contract.

“We think that one plus one is more than two, and that, in this way, we can offer our customers all the benefits of predictive maintenance in one contract,” says Krister Sällinen, Director of Automation Services at Valmet.  “With vibration-based online condition monitoring, we can identify the root causes of vibrations that interfere with the machine’s runnability. Sometimes vibrations in the press may be caused by felt problems, rather than the rolls themselves. “Customers can save money by having fewer unplanned shutdowns and better availability, as well as longer lifetimes for their rolls.”

Valmet Condition Monitoring consists of machine and vibration analysis, as well as a monthly report of the machine’s health with the findings of the analyses, on-site visits and on-call support. It provides hundreds of measurement points per machine, checking the trends and vibration changes through a secure remote connection. Using remote analysis, mills get improved visibility over the condition of their equipment. This way, problems can be detected before they develop into machine failures. As a result, mills can plan maintenance operations based on real needs, and not just on regular schedules.

Level of support pays for itself in profitability

Roll service is a specialized area of expertise and usually not the core competence of the mills’ own maintenance resources. A service agreement creates value through predictive maintenance. The level of support pays for itself in increased profitability when the mill can avoid problems and unplanned shutdowns.

The mills don’t need Valmet’s experts just for changing the rolls. They often have their own team for that. They need advice and experience to avoid unwanted surprises. It is a question of competence: it’s much wiser to depend on people who do this as their main job and have long experience in roll maintenance.

The Valmet goal is to build a long-term and full-scope roll management contract that adds value to the customer’s processes through better roll maintenance capacity, and improved reliability and availability.

Teaming up for a shared journey forward

The first to enter the full-scope roll service agreement combining roll maintenance and remote conditioning is a paper mill in Indonesia. Having a long roll maintenance history with Valmet, the mill decided to extend their cooperation into a full roll service agreement, including remote condition monitoring and technical support. With Valmet in overall charge, the mill has been able to improve the reliability and availability of its machine rolls. At the mill, the Valmet on-site team works closely together with the mill’s own maintenance people – teaming up for a shared journey forward!  A benefit of the on-site expertise, is that most of the rolls can be serviced on-site at the mill – thus saving both transportation time and the costs.
