SAO PAULO, June 2, 2010 (Press Release) -From the 7th to the 17th of June, Klabin will hold the General Maintenance Shutdown at its Monte Alegre Plant, a compulsory procedure during which the operations of pulp and paper production are interrupted. The purpose is to assure the reliability and availability of the equipment at the Monte Alegre Plant. Klabin's biggest.
Amongst the main preventive maintenance activities foreseen, are the inspections of Boilers, Digestors, Generating Systems, Power Distribution and Production Process Controls. Furthermore projects will be implemented to optimize processes and upgrade installations. During the 11 days of procedures, around 3,900 temporary workers will be involved in the activities of the mill's General Shutdown.
The greater contingent of workers requires logistics and infrastructure which include transport, lodging, meals, and other items that boost the economy of Telemaco Borba, according to company information. Other benefits can be added to this, such as the taxes generated for the municipality, additional movement in the hotels, bars, restaurants and shops of Telemaco Borba, and other services to support the stay of these workers in the town.
In the mill's installations, an internal communication campaign was planned to make all those taking part in the event aware of matters concerning safety, quality of services and organization.
"The General Shutdown both puts into practice and re-affirms the commitment that Klabin has made in its Sustainability Policy which stipulates continuous improvement in the work, health and safety conditions of our employees", states Arthur Canhisares, the Monte Alegre Plant's industrial director.
Just as in previous years, Klabin is informing the authorities and the press that during the days of the Shutdown there may be alterations in the odors and noises coming from the mill, especially when machines start operating again, but that these do not cause any harm to either people or the environment.
"We are working so that everything may run according to plan. Besides this, 70% of the firemen and security forces from the town take an active part in the procedures to avoid any problems for the town or the population", comments Leandro de Almeida Laube, coordinator of the 2010 General Shutdown. "We ask for and appreciate the population's understanding for this operation", he adds. In case of doubt, complaints, or for further clarification, the community can use the phones of Klabin's Communications area, (42) 3271-5099 and of the Environmental area, (42) 3271-5778 or 9973-4445.
