Together with the printer, Germany's Karl Knauer, the employee owned company won the Special award for producing the board used in this 'industry first' illuminated box for premium spirits brand Bombay Sapphire. This success follows closely on the box's success in other competitions such as the 2012 German Packaging Awards and underlined its credentials for ground breaking innovation in the market, heralded as the first freely available packaging with printed, actively luminescent surfaces.
The Gemini two-side gloss 500 g/m² board chosen for the box, which sets new trend-setting standards for brand presentation at point of sale, was supplied through leading German paper merchant Papier Union.
This is the third major win for Tullis Russell's boards at the Procarton Awards having won the overall "Carton of the year" award in 2010 for Tommy Hilfiger's summer fragrance and in 2009 winning in the 'volume market' category for the packaging of Wrigley's 5 chewing gum.
Malcolm Sinclair of Tullis Russell commented: "We are absolutely delighted to have won this Special Award, which recognised the highly innovative production that has got everyone talking this year. We are thrilled that we have now won for products in three different sectors - beauty and cosmetics, confectionary and now premium drinks, all on a range of different board surfaces. This clearly demonstrates the versatility of our cartonboard range, unrivalled in its choice with coated and uncoated options - and a wide variety of weights, surface finishes and environmental options."
"This achievement is testament to our success in building and sustaining successful partnerships with some of the most important printers and biggest brands across the world."
