Kappa De Zeeuw Golfkarton markets itself as "specialists in colorful packaging solutions" and with the recent installation of its Cuir six-color Rotaflexo Mark II, it's gaining even more recognition.
Kappa De Zeeuw Golfkarton purchased its Cuir Rotaflexo Mark II flexo printer almost two years ago for its Kappa Colours Division.
De Zeeuw Golfkarton, Eerbeck, the Netherlands, is part of the Kappa Packaging group, one of the top three paper and board producers in Europe.
Kappa Packaging has 71 packaging plants in 17 European countries. The company produces approximately 2.6 million tons of corrugated/solid board annually.
Kappa De Zeeuw Golfkarton produces more than 222 million corrugated board packages a year, focusing on B- and E-flute, miniflute and Micro-Corr®. The packaging it produces is primarily for the retail and food industries in and around the Netherlands. Seventy-five percent of its business is for the food and drink market. Beer producer Heineken, based in nearby Amsterdam, is one of its biggest clients.
The Brightest Colors
The facilities in Eerbeck are home to two business clusters, Industrial Packaging and Kappa Colours, which focuses on flexo printed and litho-laminated packaging.
Kappa Colours Division produces more than 222 million corrugated board packages a year, primarily in B- and E-flute, miniflute and Micro-Corr®. The packaging it produces is predominantly for the retail and food industries in and around the Netherlands.
The goal of Kappa Colours is to intently focus on the specialized market of advanced, small and medium-sized products with high-grade printing, says Erik de Boer, director of marketing and sales.
Kappa De Zeeuw has been providing color to the corrugated board industry since the 1950s - its inception in Eerbeck.
With the increasing demand for multi-color printing, in 2001, Kappa De Zeeuw decided to address that market with its purchase of a Cuir Rotaflexo Mark II six-color flexographic printer. The machine was started up that March and the company hasn't looked back. "We've seen such big improvements in our print quality since then," Manager of Operations Ed Goldebeld says.
The company was finding many of its customers asking for post-print instead of preprint, so management had that in mind when purchasing the Rotaflexo. The infeed system, register control, electronic dot gain correction, infrared drying, and a camera control system are other key reasons the company bought the machine, Goldebeld says.
A huge advantage of the machine is its top printing, de Boer says. There is easy visual print quality control between each unit and at the delivery end, and there is less risk of ink contamination since the board dust does not fall into the inking system.
Carsten Varney, marketing director for Cuir CCM, says the top printing enables better print quality by having the board supported by the impression roll at the board line. Other features of the machine include adjustable print length, minimum dot gain, ability to operate with any plate thickness, a fully automatic anilox roll quick-change system, automatic plate wash-up system, automatic plate skewing, and motorized preset settings.
Innovation is definitely a product policy at Kappa De Zeeuw. The company receives several patents a year for its inventive work. Innovation at Kappa De Zeeuw has a dual purpose - reactive and proactive.
The reactive side involves concentrating on concrete, specific problems on the basis of customer requests. Its proactive approach refers to the development and marketing of new packaging concepts. An important aspect among these new concepts is supply chain optimization, which focuses on the importance of individual links in the chain. A year ago, the company created a Vendor Managed Inventory e-business system to help tighten the link between its suppliers and its customers.
The focus on multi-color printing and innovation did not draw Kappa De Zeeuw's attention away from other packaging aspects. The company still produces standard brown shipping boxes and can offer complete packaging protection. It also experiments with ways to reduce material use and cost reductions throughout the supply chain.
The company also has two Bobst flexo printers. To supplement its high-quality printing, it has several Bobst diecutters, three Martin and one Emba flexo folder-gluers.
This customer-oriented creativity and expertise is safeguarded by appropriate quality management systems. The plant is ISO 9001 certified and also follows the sanitary code of the Corrugated Board Association. Kappa De Zeeuw also does process monitoring according to proprietary company standards. The plant will complete its ISO 14001 certification this year as part of its efforts for continuing to be an expert in the arena of high-quality printing.
