STATEN ISLAND, NY, Sept. 17, 2013 (Staten Island Live) -Next time you grab a pie from your favorite pizzeria, take notice of the box. In many cases, it was formerly an old newspaper or magazine that was recycled and transformed into a pizza box right here on Staten Island.

It all starts with paper and cardboard left curbside throughout the five boroughs for recycling. Much of that paper has contributed to the 5 million tons of paper recycled at Pratt Industries' Travis facility since it opened in 1997. "About half of all the paper New Yorkers recycle is shipped here and recycled through the Pratt mill. If New Yorkers aren't impressed by that, they will appreciate the importance of what this paper gets turned into -- pizza boxes, thousands of them every day,"said Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who helped mark the 5 millionth ton of paper recycled at Pratt Industries at a press conference at the facility on Tuesday.
