November 21, 2014 - 08:52

Essentra's $455 million acquisition of Clondalkin Group's specialist packaging division (SPD) includes five folding carton plants in the US and four in Europe focused on pharmaceuticals and healthcare.

Clondalkin's SPD has estimated 2014 revenues of $438 million, mostly in pharma and personal care, with 51 percent of revenues in cartons, followed by leaflets and labels.

The 24 global SPD locations include eight in North America, with folding carton sites in Portland, CT, Guaynabo, PR, Evansville, IN, Moorestown, NJ, and Charlotte, NC, as well as four others in Dublin, Ireland, Lublin, Poland, Barcelona, Spain, and Northampton, UK. The SPD operations employ a total of 2,400.

Clondalkin will retain flexible packaging and consumer label, card and digital printing operations. Completion of the sale is expected in first quarter 2015.

ESNT International, a unit of European packaging printer Essentra, will acquire the SPD business. The sale marks Essentra's entry to the US market.
