KapStone Paper and Packaging Corporation ("KapStone" or "the Company") On Thursday, November 6, 2014 at the RISI International Containerboard Conference, Roger Stone was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Stone, who is the first recipient of this award, was also the keynote speaker.
Mr. Stone is currently Chairman and CEO of KapStone Paper and Packaging Corporation. During his nearly 60-year career, Stone built three major companies in the North American containerboard/corrugated box industry.
Stone began his career at Stone Container in 1957 and served as its Chairman, President and CEO from 1987 through 1998. He led the growth of Stone Container by completing numerous acquisitions eventually grew it into the world's largest producer of containerboard and boxes by 1989. Upon the merger of Stone Container with Jefferson Smurfit Corporation in 1998, he became President and Chief Executive Officer of the merged corporation--Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation--until his retirement in 1999.
Stone's retirement was brief as he became Chairman and CEO of Box USA in 2000. He built Box USA into the largest independent paper-based packaging company in the US, and then in 2004, sold Box USA to International Paper.
In 2005, Stone founded KapStone using $120 million of proceeds raised from an IPO. At KapStone, thus far, he has completed four major acquisitions, and the company is now the fifth largest North American containerboard producer and the largest kraft paper supplier.
Currently, Stone is also Chairman of Stone Tan China Holding Corporation, and he serves as a Director of McDonald's Corporation.
