Brazilian corrugated board sales drop 3%

September 17, 2013 - 06:22

SAO PAULO, Sept. 17, 2013 (PPI Latin America) -The latest data released by the Brazilian corrugated board assn (ABPO) show a 3% decrease in corrugated board shipments in August to 292,103 tonnes over the same month of last year.

The volume, though, is 3.4% higher than the 282,413 tonnes shipped in July.

"The market had a slight improvement in August over July, especially for corrugated board. The prospects for September are high as we are going to enter the period of highest paper consumption in all segments. Let's wait and see if the perspective comes true," a supplier told PPI Latin America.

A packaging producer mentioned that corrugated board shipments were higher in August over July, but the volume was "below expectations for a month like August which is typically one of the strongest months of the year".

As for January-August 2013, the ABPO data show a 2.8% increase in corrugated board volumes over a year ago to 2.23 million tonnes.

PPI Latin Americansources mentioned that corrugated packaging suppliers may seek a new price adjustment until the end of the year to pass on recovered paper and containerboard higher costs.
