NORTHEIM, Germany, March 12, 2018 (Press Release) -“THIMM COOLandFREEZE”, the modular packaging for temperature-controlled shipping has won the iF Design Award 2018. The innovative shipping packaging enables deep-frozen, refrigerated and non-refrigerated products to be shipped together in one combined delivery.
The different temperature zones within one shipping package make “THIMM COOLandFREEZE” a sustainable e-commerce innovation. The different zones are ideally suited for shipping temperature-sensitive food and medical products. These shipments can also be combined with temperature-resistant products.
“The design consists of a two-part outer packaging and modular inlays for the different temperature zones,” explains Martin Meinecke, Packaging Developer at Thimm. “The outer packaging has a polyethylene coating which protects from moisture such as condensation. Its new folding technology means the packaging box can be quickly assembled and stabilised. The temperature zones are created with inlays. This means they can be combined in different ways – for example for transporting fruit or vegetables together with fresh products such as cheese or sausage.”
The inlay for non-refrigerated products is made of corrugated cardboard and is the basis for the additional temperature zones. A blanket made from natural fibres enclosed with polyethylene film acts as an insulator. Water-based ice packs ensure a target temperature below 3 degrees Celsius and create the transportation zone for refrigerated products. Dry ice is used for frozen products in order to reach a temperature of -18 degrees Celsius. These cooling elements control the intensity of the product refrigeration which remains for up to 48 hours.
The packaging is delivered pre-assembled or as a flat pre-cut part. This temperature-controlled packaging made from corrugated cardboard offers a more sustainable alternative to solutions made from polystyrene or plastic.
iF Design Award
The iF DESIGN AWARD has been considered since 1953 as an internationally recognised label for good design. About 60 independent experts from over 20 countries followed a clearly structured process with strict criteria to select the prizewinners. As part of this, the jury assessed innovation and development, functionality, design quality, responsibility and positioning. The awards ceremony of the iF Design Award took place on 9 March at BMW Welt in Munich.
