SPM to supply Eska paper mill in the Netherlands with condition monitoring system

February 24, 2020 - 05:08

STRANGNAS, Sweden, Feb. 3, 2020 (Press Release) -The Dutch solid board producer Eska has decided to equip the PM7 papermill with a condition monitoring system from SPM Instrument. They have chosen the Intellinova Parallel EN and Intellinova standard system for monitoring this critical machine.

The goal of Eska is to perform more and more condition-based maintenance in the future. The investment in an online system from SPM fits well with this maintenance strategy and maintenance planning optimization. Eska extends its maintenance stop interval from 6 to 12 weeks. This change makes it very important that bearing damage is detected as early as possible. Next to this the company is working on improving the machine barriers, which increases safety. This makes it impossible to perform traditional measurements with portable equipment on the bearings. Thanks to this investment, Eska is ready for the future and Industry 4.0!

With an online condition monitoring system, periodic maintenance can be postponed, and the service life of the various applications can be extended. As a first project the papermill will be equipped with eighty DuoTech sensors, with these sensors both vibration and shock pulse measurements can be performed. The patented measuring techniques HD ENV, SPM HD and HD Order Tracking provide insight into the mechanical and lubrication condition of the monitored applications, even at extremely low speeds. When the mechanical or lubrication condition deteriorates, these measurement techniques ensure extremely long pre-warning times. The system will be installed jointly by SPM Instrument and Eska during 2019.

Maintenance Engineer Gerben Oppewal about the investment:

'"With this online condition monitoring system we are making big steps in the field of safety and machine reliability. Previously it was not possible for us to measure all bearings in the vulnerable wet section. However, with this investment we will get this option. With the help of the online system we expect to prevent bearing damage, because lubrication problems are detected earlier. If damage nevertheless develops, we will now be warned early. This is important with our goal of doubling the time between our maintenance stops. We expect a good cooperation with SPM that also fits well with our wishes with Industry 4.0 for the future."

Eska has two production locations in the Netherlands. One factory is in Sappemeer (since 1879) and the other in Hoogezand (since 1897). Eska produces 275,000 tonnes of solid cardboard per year, which is used, among other things, for book covers, puzzles and luxury packaging.
