Metsä Board taps Valmet to improve quality consistency using artificial intelligence at its Kemi mill in Finland

September 17, 2020 - 06:22

BRUSSELS, Sept. 17, 2020 (PPI Europe) -Metsä Board has commissioned Valmet to install analytical solutions and technology for quality management on the paper machine at its Kemi mill in Finland. The aim is to improve the mill’s productivity and the runnability of its white kraftliner on a customer’s corrugating line.

Valmet will supply the mill with Valmet Industrial Internet VII Data Discovery and VII for Paper Quality solutions. The value of the order was not disclosed.

“We strive at continuously developing the high performance of our paperboards. In paperboard production, there are several quality parameters that we need to balance. With the data coming directly from the customer’s converting lines we can find the optimal combination,“ Metsä Board SVP of development Ari Kiviranta said, adding: “In addition, we can follow the effect of the supply chain on the quality parameters, for example, the moisture content of the board during transport.”

Metsä Board will be collaborating with DS Smith on the project.

Metsä Board started using artificial intelligence on Kyro’s board machine last year. The firm said it is now looking at implementing artificial intelligence on other production lines as well.
