REMSHALDEN, Germany , June 6, 2019 (Press Release) -The Klingele Group, one of the leading independent manufacturers of corrugated base paper and corrugated cardboard packaging, received the World Corrugated Award 2019 in the “Environment-friendly and Intensive Production Contribution” category on 7 April in Shanghai. With its convincing environmentally friendly and resource-saving strategy, Klingele prevailed over five competitors in its category in the final. The 14-member jury based its decision on the fact that Klingele consistently implements measures for the energy-efficient and sustainable production of environmentally friendly products, including the use of renewable energies and innovative production technologies. Mirko Klepsch, an employee in the Central Engineering department at Klingele, accepted the award from Peter van Ostaijen, Managing Director of the Corrugated Benelux Association (CBA), in front of an audience of approximately 300 guests.
The award was presented jointly for the first time this year in eight categories by international packaging associations and the exhibition organiser Reed Exhibitions. The launch took place in November 2018 and an international audience was able to vote online via an internet platform in the first round as of January 20. In total, over 1.1 million votes were cast; this high level of participation shows the keen interest in the World Corrugated Awards.
Klingele impressed the jury with its business model that is not only based on environmentally friendly products, but also on a production process geared towards resource and energy efficiency. Corrugated cardboard packaging is made from renewable raw materials, is 100% recyclable and is completely biodegradable; this makes it an attractive choice for all companies wanting to minimise their own carbon footprint. Product innovations and the creativity of the development team at Klingele have also long since made corrugated cardboard packaging accessible for complex applications, for example, for plants or food.
The deciding factor in presenting the award to Klingele was the packaging manufacturer's comprehensive strategy to reduce the environmental impact caused by the use of energy in production.
Reducing energy consumption
The first pillar of energy management at Klingele is based on consistent energy savings through a variety of measures, such as the use of modern machinery, components and technologies or improved processes and conduct. As a result, Klingele has reduced its specific consumption of electricity and steam per ton of paper in paper production by 30% and 29% respectively since 2000. The measures in corrugated cardboard production have also made an impact: the specific consumption of thermal energy has decreased by 31% since 2000.
As a second pillar of energy management, Klingele consistently focuses on sustainable energy production. The long-term aim is to cover the total energy consumption from regenerative sources and to recycle waste. Through the use of wind power and photovoltaics as well as power plants based on biogas, biomass, alternative fuels and waste materials, around 85% of the heat requirement and 55% of the electricity requirement will be provided from renewable sources including the recycling of waste materials after completion of the current investments in 2020.
Offsetting the remaining emissions
As a further step, Klingele offers complete CO2-neutral packaging for environmentally conscious customers in cooperation with the consulting company ClimatePartner: with this model, the customers support certified climate projects to offset the remaining and (still) unavoidable CO2 emissions generated by their order. Klingele and its customers currently support wind energy projects in Morocco, forest protection in Germany and water treatment in Cambodia.
“Corrugated cardboard is a wonderful, environmentally friendly and sustainable product. For us, it goes without saying that we also take this into account in production and produce our packaging in harmony with the environment”, states Dr.Jan Klingele, Managing Partner of Klingele Papierwerke. “It is a great endorsement, of which I am very proud, that we have been recognised by the World Corrugated Awards as the most environmentally friendly company in the world within our industry.”
