Holmen's paperboard and paper mills receive highest sustainability rating from Ecovadis

September 17, 2020 - 09:11

STOCKHOLM, Sept. 17, 2020 (Press Release) -Holmen's paperboard and paper mills have been awarded the highest possible rating by the international assessment company Ecovadis. The paperboard mills in Iggesund and Workington as well as the paper mills Braviken and Hallsta have all been awarded Ecovadis Platinum, which means that all Holmen's mills belong to the absolute top tier of all assessed companies.

Ecovadis assesses companies on the basis of their performance in four themes: environment, labour & human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement. With more than 65,000 assessments in over 200 sectors and 160 countries, Ecovadis is a guide for companies' choice of suppliers.

In 2020, Ecovadis revised its medal thresholds and introduced a new medal, Ecovadis Platinum, specially designed to reward the highest-ranked companies. The platinum medal includes only the top 1 percent of all rated companies.

“Holmen’s production plants are among the most resource-efficient in the world. Over the years, we have effectively reduced our use of energy, water and chemicals, and we recover and reuse the waste that arises. Together with our tough requirements concerning the environment, ethics and transparency, it creates confidence and trust in our relationships with customers and partners. The fact that all our mills have been awarded Ecovadis Platinum is proof of our long-term and goal-oriented work”, says Elin Swedlund, sustainability manager for the Holmen Group.

Holmen delivers concrete solutions to some of society's major challenges and has over the past ten years appeared on several indices of the world's 100 most sustainable companies.

“We are a partner for sustainable business, helping our customers to switch to renewable solutions. As a Swedish forest company, we have a great opportunity to influence our customers and society positively, not least from a climate perspective”, says Elin Swedlund.

Holmen’s business concept is to own and add value to the forest. The forest holdings form the basis of the business – an ecocycle in which the raw material grows and is refined into everything from wood for climate-smart building to renewable packaging, magazines and books. The forest is managed to provide a good annual return and stable value growth while our production operations are run with a focus on profitability and greater value added. In 2019 Holmen’s net sales were approx. SEK 17 billion and the group has approx. 3 000 employees. Holmen’s shares are listed on Nasdaq Stockholm, Large Cap.
