VAREL, Germany, Nov. 15, 2019 (Press Release) -The Papier-und Kartonfabrik (PVK) is continuing to develop its mill with an ongoing strategic program lasting several years. The focus is on investments in quality and energy efficiency as well as meeting the growing demand for sustainable packaging.

Varel. PKV will further develop its mill into a production capacity of one million tons of corrugated board papers and board in coming years. The raw material is and remains recycled waste paper. At the same time, PKV is investing massively in energy efficiency. The company is currently implementing a seven-year strategy program with a total volume of 280 million euros to strengthen and modernize this site.

PKV is not only investing in increasing production volumes and thus in the growing market for sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging, but is also continuously improving the quality of its products, the energy efficiency of its systems and the flexible and reliable supply of its customers. PKV will continue to produce a very wide range of corrugated board papers and board in the future. “This enables us to offer our customers and partners in the packaging industry a variety of products that hardly any other individual location in our industry can offer, “says shareholder Kristian Evers.

The first parts of this programme have already been implemented, such as the construction of a plant of processing plastic components from recycled waste paper and the construction of two new logistics halls. Further important steps will follow in the coming months and years. A new online duplex sheeter is currently being commissioned and tested on board machine 2. A milestone in the coming year will be the rebuild of the wire and press section of paper machine 4.  This will increase PKV’s production capacity for established grades JadeWhite Classic and JadeKraft (from total of 300,000 to 360,000) and also improve energy efficiency. The machine will be shut down for around five weeks from February 2020. PKV works closely with its customers to coordinate any pre-production that may be necessary.

As part of the program, PKV Is also modernizing and expanding its board production, its process water treatment plant and its power plant (construction is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2020), thus continuously developing all plants and processes to increase production capacity by around 18 percent to one million tons. The proven division of 70 percent paper and 30 percent board production will be maintained in the future.

At the same time, PKV continues to invest out of conviction and emphatically in the conservation of natural resources. The energy consumption per ton already by more than 24 percent since 2000 and thus the emission of CO2is to be reduced by a further 23 percent in the coming years.
