DS Smith's research reveals 54% of people would prefer to receive flowers straight to their home in Valentine’s Day

LONDON, Feb. 13, 2020 (Press Release) -Romantics are being urged to spare their loved one’s blushes this Valentine’s Day with new statistics showing over a third (36%) of people would be embarrassed to receive a flower delivery at work.

Research from sustainable packaging company DS Smith, has revealed that over half (54%) of people would prefer to receive flowers straight to their home – with just 12% saying that they would prefer to receive flowers in front of their colleagues.

Indeed, new trends show companies pivoting towards home deliveries with compact, sustainable packaging that allows flowers to be posted neatly through letterboxes. As a result, these companies are some of the fastest growing businesses in the UK.

They also avoid the big issue of missed deliveries and porch pirates stealing uncollected deliveries from doorsteps – meaning fewer disappointed partners at Valentine’s Day.  Nearly a quarter (23%) of people who’ve had a flower delivery say they’ve previously missed one and of these, 21% say this led to the flowers being ruined and over a third (35%) claim it meant they got them late or after their special occasion.

E-commerce trends show that millennials spend 60 percent of their shopping time online, overtaking both Generation Z and Generation X. This focus on the digital applies to flower-buying too, with experts predicting that e-commerce will account for 30% of the share of the floral industry in Europe by 2027.
