Visy opens new $86 million beverage can plant in Australia

April 01, 2013 - 09:36

SYDNEY, April 1, 2013 (The Australian) -BILLIONAIRE paper, packaging and recycling magnate Anthony Pratt believes there is still a strong future for Australian manufacturing despite the headwinds of the high dollar and soaring labour and energy costs, commissioning the nation's first new can plant in more than two decades.

Opening Visy Group's $86 million Stapylton beverage can manufacturing facility on the Gold Coast on Thursday, Mr Pratt said the new factory was "further proof that competitive manufacturing can have a bright future in Australia, provided manufacturers are prepared to invest".

"It's also the latest example of how we intend to keep investing to remain competitive and therefore help our customers remain competitive," he told the crowd at the opening, which included Queensland Premier Campbell Newman, Pratt's mother and Visy co-chairman Jeanne Pratt, and his sister and co-Visy owner Fiona Geminder.
