Major cartonboard mills taking downtime in China

April 28, 2015 - 14:25

SHANGHAI, April 23, 2015 (RISI) - Two major cartonboard mills are currently taking ten days of downtime, curtailing market supply by some 48,000 tonnes.

PMs at APP China's mill in Qinzhou city, Guangxi autonomous region and Asia Symbol (Shandong) Pulp & Paper's mill in Rizhao city, Shandong province suspended production on April 19 and 18 respectively for maintenance.

The coated ivory board PM at APP China's Qinzhou mill has a capacity of 1.2 million tonnes/yr.

The Voith unit, with a width of 8.7 m and a design speed of 1,400 m/min, started up in 2013.

In Rizhao, Asia Symbol has two cartonboard PMs with a combined capacity of 530,000 tonnes/yr.

The bigger one, which started up last year, can produce the liquid packaging board and coated ivory board grades at a rate of 350,000 tonnes/yr.

The smaller one has a capacity of 180,000 tonnes/yr.

Market sources reported that the two bleached hardwood kraft (BHK) pulp lines with a combined capacity of around 2.1 million tonnes/yr at the Rizhao plant are on downtime for annual maintenance, so the two PMs they furnish halted production.

Contacts also said that the downtime at the two mills will not impact market prices, as cartonboard supply remains ample.
