Located in eastern France, not far from printing presses and the major commercial publishers, the Norske Skog Golbey paper mill (NSG), a subsidiary of the Norwegian Group, Norske Skogindustrier, delivers 600,000 tonnes of newsprint and receives more than one million tonnes of raw materials (wood and recycled paper) every year. It uses the Transwide modules, twCall-off, twSlot and twTrace, in SaaS mode, to efficiently manage more than 200 lorries every day.
Norske Skog Golbey outsourced the operational management of its road transport needs to Cetrama, a subsidiary of Transports Mauffrey, and implemented Transwide, the best known transport management system on the French market, provided by Wolters Kluwer Transport Services, following a full review of its road transport management strategy in 2010. The review was designed to create the most innovative, profitable and responsible logistics model for delivering its reels of paper, in good time, to its clients worldwide. It showed a clear need to outsource operational management and increase the number of transport partners, while maintaining control of transport purchasing and invoicing, relying on its SAP ERP. Added to this was the need to make the arrival of lorries run more smoothly in order to relieve congestion at the production site and reduce queues.
Transwide's TMS software solution, capable of interfacing in real time with SAP, was crucial to help NSG change the way it was organised. Operational in a matter of weeks, the Transwide solution combines three modules: twCall-off for the electronic communication of transport orders; twSlot, designed to schedule slots with cameras online; and twTrace to track deliveries. Now, NSG's logistics department, Cetrama's employees and the 30 listed carriers use the Transwide solution every day.
"Centralising all the key information and automating all the administrative tasks via a direct link with SAP, the Transwide solution is incredibly easy to use, saves a great deal of time and offers optimum convenience when it comes to managing shipping orders and delivery receipts and optimising the comings and goings of more than 200 trucks. We can now communicate with carriers and generate statistics in just a few clicks," says Franck Royer, who is responsible for transport organisation at Norske Skog Golbey within Cetrama.
At the heart of the new outsourced organisation, the Transwide solution now manages all arrivals and departures for the 30 carriers used by the paper mill site. As well as making these run more smoothly and improving security, it means that NSG can manage, coordinate and secure all road traffic on its site.
In practical terms, the Transwide solution, fully linked up to SAP and the paper restocking tool, collects the information about deliveries, organises the traffic and opens up available time slots for carriers, 24 hours before deliveries come in or go out, depending on the type of products being loaded or unloaded. Carriers are kept informed in real time via twCall-off, by logging on to the web portal, and then use twSlot to schedule delivery slots. The process of arranging delivery slots and transferring the 200 transport orders placed every day is totally automated, so Cetrama, now freed up from the need to carry out administrative tasks, can focus on its core business, which involves coordinating and monitoring the quality of the road transport service.
Fabrice Grangirard, Sales Director at Transport Mauffrey, says: "We were won over by Transwide's collaborative approach, offering modular SaaS solutions that can quickly be adopted by everyone involved. In particular its slot scheduling portal, which is used by carriers more and more because of how user-friendly it is and the fact that it is free."
In addition, carriers can inform Cetrama of any delays, incidents or problems at any time thanks to the twTrace module. It also means that Cetrama and NSG can have a 360º overview of the transport process, easily measure the punctuality of loading and delivery processes, and quickly identify any issues using programmable alerts.
Encouraged by the success of this initial rollout of Transwide solutions, and driven by NSG, Cetrama is planning to acquire a new module, twContract, in the next few months in order to further enhance the management of carrier contracts and price discounts and to optimise the transport plan.
Jean-Yves Bourguignon NSG's Head of Logistics: "We are incredibly happy with the way the Transwide solution has optimised our road transport. The results have included a 99% satisfaction rate among our clients in terms of the punctuality of our deliveries, and a reduction of more than 100 hours a week in planning and monitoring our transport needs."
