TAPPI names nine Fellows for 2010

NORCROSS, GA, March 31, 2010 (Press Release) -TAPPI has announced its 2010 TAPPI Fellows. Fellow is an honorary title bestowed upon less than one percent of TAPPI's membership and is given to individuals who have made extraordinary technical or service contributions to the industry and/or the Association.

The following nine individuals have been named 2010 TAPPI Fellows:

  • Gerald M. Dykstra, Retired from Buckman, Bartlett, Tenn., USA - Formerly Buckman's Pulp and Paper Technology Director, Research and Development. His career in research and development includes service at Abbott Laboratories, Corn Products International, Central Soya, and Nalco. Dykstra holds nearly a halfdozen patents in papermaking processes. Additionally, he has been extensively published. He has specialized in wet-end chemistry, traditional and enzymatic deposit control, retention/drainage management, creping additives, wet and dry strength additives, and coating applications.
  • Martin A. Hubbe, PhD, Professor, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C., USA - He began his postcollege career with American Cyanamid Corp. as a research associate and continued his corporate work at International Paper Company as a research associate and later principal scientist. He joined the faculty at North Carolina State University in 1998 where he is now a professor in the Department of Wood and Paper Science in Raleigh, N.C., USA. Dr. Hubbe has nearly 120 publications to his credit, including books and papers published in professional journals and courses at conferences. He holds five patents. He wrote and published the TAPPI book "Cost-Saving Strategies in Papermaking Chemistry" with co-author Kasy King and wrote the introductory chapter of Jose Rodriguez's TAPPI book "Microparticles and Nano-Microparticles for Papermaking."
  • John C. Husband, PhD, Lead Scientist, IMERYS Minerals Ltd., Cornwall, United Kingdom - His professional career began in 1969 when he joined the Chemistry Research Department of English China Clays, working with projects on clay chemistry and rheology, then working on the development of paper fillers. In 1983, he began working on paper coating and in 2000 he transferred to the IMERYS Worldwide Paper Group. Granted eight patents, Dr. Husband's work has been extensively published in professional journals. On the basis of his research experience, he has become a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He was jointly awarded the Silver Medal from the Institute of Printing in 2003. Dr. Husband is an active member of TAPPI, serving as a member of the Coating Fundamentals CIG and the TPC for the C&GA Division Coating Conference.
  • Cheryl M. Lamb, PhD, Retired from Buckman, Ellenton, Fla., USA - Lamb recently retired from Buckman as Director of Knowledge Services. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with Bachelor of Science degree in Geology and a Master of Arts in Library Science. Cheryl received her Doctor of Biblical Studies and Theology from Masters International School of Divinity. Dr. Lamb began her career with the U.S. Geological Survey Branch of Astrogeology in Flagstaff, Ariz. Later, she served as coordinator of the Learning Resource Centers at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. She then worked for a dozen years as Manager of the Technical Information Center at Georgia-Pacific before going to Buckman. She is a faculty member for the Knowledge Champions Institute in Washington, DC.
  • Patrice J. Mangin, PhD, General Director, Centre Intégré en Pâtes et Papiers/Université du Québec à Trois Rivières, Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada -- He founded and served as Chief Executive Officer of CTP International as well as holding positions as CEO at the Centre Technique du Papier and Chairman of the Board of TechPap in Grenoble, France. He created his own strategic consulting firm before building the CAN $80 million Centre Intégré en Pâtes et Papiers/Université du Québec à Trois Rivières in Quebec. He now serves as General Director of CIPP and as professor of chemical engineering at UQTR. With more than 130 published technical papers, Mangin is deeply immersed in research and development in the industry.
  • Frank J. Sutman, Global R&D Platform Lead, Ashland Hercules Water Technologies, Wilmington, Del., USA -- During the past 26 years Sutman has worked in various paper industry technical and research roles for Great Northern Paper Company, Betz Paperchem, and Hercules in Maine, Florida, and now Delaware. Sutman has published more than a dozen technical papers and holds six patents in the field of papermaking chemistry. His technical focus has been on the application of water-soluble polymers to papermaking. He has been extremely active in TAPPI's Engineering Division since 1984. Sutman received the TAPPI Engineering Division Leadership and Service Award in 2005.
  • Jukka H. Tiitinen, President Metso-Paper and Fiber Technology North America, Atlanta, Ga., USA - Tiitinen began his career with Metso, formerly Valmet Corporation, in Finland where he worked for six years. He then relocated to Australia for two years, where he served as the firm's General Manager of Sales and Projects. He first came to North America with the company's Roll Service, based in Charlotte, N.C. He was named Vice President and General Manager of Valmet's Hudson Falls, N.Y., division and later served as Vice President of Roll Service in North America. In October 2001, he returned to Finland as President of Metso Paper's Service Business Line, overseeing the company's global service activities. In March 2004, Tiitinen became president of Metso Paper North America and relocated to Atlanta, Ga. He is currently involved in the Tamfelt acquisition.
  • Ronald L. Van Gilder, Research Fellow, Sappi Fine Paper N.A., Westbrook, Maine, USA -- In 2004, he was named Research Fellow with Sappi Fine Paper North America Technology Center in Westbrook, Maine. He holds several patents and has published more than two dozen technical papers. Additionally, he has presented at numerous technical meetings and courses. Van Gilder is known for his work regarding inkcoating interactions, specifically on binder contribution in offset printing of coated papers. His technical papers have brought significant quality advancement to the science in this area. In addition, Ron has been awarded the TAPPI Best Research Paper Award and has received the TAPPI Coating and Graphic Arts Division Best Paper award twice. Ron served for many years on the TAPPI Coating and Graphic Arts Technical Program Committee and chaired the Technical Program Committee in 1998 for the joint Papermakers and the Coating & Graphic Arts Division Conference as well as chairing the joint 2001 Coating and Graphic Arts Conference and Technical Association of Graphic Arts. He has served on the TAPPI Coating and Graphics Arts Division Steering Committee in different capacities including chair of this division plus TAPPI Leadership Workshops and Leader's Forums.
  • Mark T. Watkins, Senior Vice President, MWV(MeadWestvaco) Corporation, Richmond, Va., USA - Watkins currently serves as Senior Vice President of MeadWestvaco Corporation in Richmond, Va., and is responsible for corporate engineering, stewardship, sustainability, safety, health and environmental issues. Watkins joined Mead in 1997 as Vice President of Michigan operations for the Publishing Paper Division, where he had oversight of the Escanaba, Mich., paper mill and related woodland and sawmill operations. In 1999, he was promoted to Vice President of Human Resources and Organizational Development for the newly combined Paper Division. He was appointed Vice President of Technology for Mead in 2000. The new TAPPI Fellows will be honored at the TAPPI Fellows Luncheon, Sunday, May 2, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency, Atlanta, Ga., USA in conjunction with the 2010 PaperCon meeting. www.papercon.org
