Resolute’s Fort Frances, ON, pulp and paper mill installs total reduced sulfur controls after area complaints of odor; mill is idle through January

January 19, 2012 - 07:58

INTERNATIONAL FALLS, MN, Jan. 19, 2012 (Local News) -U.S. Environmental Protection Agency staff have reported to Koochiching County officials that the Fort Frances mill has installed the required controls to lower total reduced sulfur compounds.

The mill and its TRS levels have reportedly been the source of an odor that caused some International Falls area residents to complain of nausea and burning eyes.

Randy Robinson, of the EPA's Region 5 office in Chicago, reported to the Koochiching County Board that Environment Canada informed the EPA Jan. 3 that Resolute Forest Products, formerly known as Abitibi Consolidated, had installed the required controls to reduce TRS levels and reported seeing a drop in the levels.
