Kadant Lamort receives European Paper Recycling Technology award

March 15, 2016 - 05:16

VITRY-le-FRANCOIS, France, March 15, 2016 (Press Release) -Kadant Lamort SAS, a subsidiary of Kadant Inc., recently received the European Paper Recycling award in the category “Technology Improvement and R&D” by the European Recovered Paper Council. The award was based on Kadant Lamort’s research and development activities related to advanced fiber processing technologies and equipment for recycling polyethylene-coated cups (polycups) at James Cropper Specialty Papers in the U.K.

“It is an honor to receive this award and to be recognized for the technical developments and contributions we have made in paper recycling and specifically with this fiber source,” said Alain Serres, president of Kadant Lamort. Alain Lascar, Kadant Lamort’s director of technology and marketing noted, “The technical challenge of cost-effectively separating high-quality fiber and polyethylene was substantial, and one that our team embraced with the group at James Cropper as we worked to solve this problem together. This was the first time recycling polycups while also producing high quality pulp.”

The pioneering polycoated waste recycling system developed by Kadant has played a key role in raising the profile of polycups as a renewable, recyclable, and low-carbon packaging source. The solution deployed at James Cropper, along with other Kadant technologies applied to recycling specialty grades at other plants, is increasing in importance as the supply of long fiber is becoming more strained and mills seek innovative and sustainable methods to reuse fiber when possible.

The European Recovered Paper Council (ERPC) was established with the launch of the First European Declaration on Paper Recovery with the aim to monitor the progress made towards meeting the recycling targets set out in the European Declaration. The awards given out by the ERPC are based on relevance, originality, achievements, possibility to reproduce the project, cost effectiveness, and contribution to Europe’s sustainability through activities supporting paper recycling.
