New unit is part of a €55m and three-year investment program of Horizon, Baltics' leading sack kraft producer exporting 100 percent of its output. The project has been supported by the state investment agency EAS and SEB Pank.
"New technology has reduced the mill's total energy consumption by 25 percent and water consumption by 0.7 million cubic metres annually. The mill's CO2 emissions will be cut by 35 percent and energy savings will be worth approximately €2.5m annually", Aime-Kersti Kelder, Member of the Management Board of Horizon Pulp & Paper highlighted the benefits of the new technology. It is equivalent to removing 5000 cars from the roads in terms of CO2 emissions. Moreover, in last five years, the company has cut by half its CO2 emissions.
"Every investment aimed at improving air quality and cutting industry emissions is of great significance in terms of environmental protection, especially for large-scale production facilities like Horizon. Increasing efficiency and lower emissions will provide competitive advantages for the company in the global market", Minister Keit Pentus noted.
Part of the investment includes setting up a modern industrial 30MW CHP plant using renewable biomass and producing green energy, which will make the company almost self sufficient to meet its energy needs.
The components of the new cooking plant supplied by a global paper technology leader Metso consist of two digesters with measures of 5.3 metres width and 18 metres height and three accumulators measuring respectively 4.8 metres and 22 metres.
Horizon Pulp & Paper is Estonia's only sack kraft paper producer that exports to 52 countries around the globe. A subsidiary of the Singapore headquartered international industry group Tolaram, Horizon possesses substantially modernised production facilities with a total investment of approximately €80m in over 15 years, about €40m of that channelled to investments of reducing emissions. Since 1995 when Tolaram Group acquired the mill it has invested significantly in achieving better standards in quality, efficiency and environmental protection.
