HELSINKI, Aug. 9, 2018 (Press Release) -The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals are the framework that governments, business and civil society use to drive the sustainability agenda. With those goals in mind, UPM Raflatac developed the Biofore Site concept and set responsibility targets for 2030 that aim to improve its environmental, social and economic performance. The aim is to build a site-specific roadmap that includes auditing, measuring and evaluating progress. The Biofore Site concept will facilitate growth of a strong sustainability culture and increase transparency.

Two powerful imperatives shape our business today: the requirement to be a world class manufacturer and the need to improve sustainability performance. At UPM Raflatac, we recognize that these two imperatives are not mutually exclusive.

For example, all UPM Raflatac production facilities face a 2030 target to be landfill free. And while we seek out the best outlets to recycle, reuse or incinerate with energy recovery our waste streams, the best way to avoid landfilling is to not generate the waste at all. The true goal is waste prevention, and that’s one area where continuous improvement (CI) activities have a main role to play.

Continuous Improvement by UPM Raflatac furthers the sustainability culture

Our Continuous Improvement by UPM Raflatac model, which involves execution of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies, guides improvement efforts in our factories by focusing on controlling product variation, reducing defects and eliminating waste of all kinds in our production processes.

“Our Lean Daily Management System promotes employee involvement in job planning, problem solving, and waste elimination. We have opportunities to minimize wasted raw materials, laminate, electricity, natural gas, water, chemicals, packaging, consumables and no doubt other resources. Our employees are in the best position to identify these opportunities to achieve both production efficiency and environmental benefits,” explains Mark Walkington, Manager, Global Continuous Improvement, UPM Raflatac.

Although the primary aims of Continuous Improvement projects are to improve quality and efficiency, we recognize that projects utilising Lean or Six Sigma tools have environmental benefits even if they don’t have stated environmental targets.

As we continue on our Biofore Site journey, UPM Raflatac aims to better identify and quantify the environmental benefits realized via our Continuous Improvement by UPM Raflatac work so that our employees can see how their daily efforts in production excellence help to achieve our sustainability targets.

Continuous Improvement by UPM Raflatac in 2010-2017:

  • +400 projects utilizing Lean and Six Sigma tools
  • minimized raw materials and labelstock waste
  • minimized electricity, natural gas, water, chemicals, packaging and consumables use
  • 400 employees trained for Yellow, Green, and Black Belts, and Master Black Belts
  • Goal is to train all operational personnel to Lean Fundamentals and Yellow Belt
