PARIS , May 31, 2018 (Press Release) -Carrefour announces its plan to reinvent packaging, by moving away from disposable packaging in favor of a circular economy, as part of its food transition for all campaign. It plans to reach its target of 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable packaging for the Group’s own brands by 2025.
Carrefour is calling for collective action
Creating a new packaging economy and stamping out plastic waste is a considerable challenge that requires collective action. In line with the Circular Economy Roadmap driven by the Ministry for Environmental and Sustainable Transition (Ministère de la transition écologique et solidaire), Carrefour supports the creation of a National Pact for plastics to achieve a 100% circular economy of packaging in France. This transition requires a collective rethink of ressource use, to reduce the use of packaging and single-use plastics and to systematize recycling.
Reducing single-use plastics
Carrefour is implementing measures to move away from the disposable plastic model. The Group is planning to eliminate non-recyclable packaging of Organic fruit and vegetables and to stop selling plastic straws by the end of 2018 and to gradually replace plastic straws on juice cartons.
Speeding up the recycling of packaging
Carrefour is committed to using recyclable packaging for all its products, starting with its Organic Carrefour products, as of 2020. Polystyrene trays used in the Meat, Fish and Cheese departments will be replaced with recyclable packaging.
Furthermore, Carrefour is committed to using recycled materials. As of 2022, the Group will use 50% recycled plastics for its juice and soda bottles and 50% for its water bottles.
The Plastic Attack Movement
Carrefour welcomes and supports the Plastic Attack citizen movement to seek solutions. This initiative’s goal is to raise consumer awareness on plastic packaging by carrying out in-store operations and encouraging customers to get rid of excessive plastic packaging.
Awareness-raising operations will be carried out in various Carrefour stores on Saturday June 2.
