Wisconsin paper, timber industries seek to revive rail freight with CN

MILWAUKEE, Feb. 17, 2014 (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) -After a decade of animosity threatened to all but destroy the rural rail lines that fan out across Wisconsin, a quiet effort is under way that could mend the ties between the state's paper and timber industries, which rely on the network, and Canadian National Railway Co., which owns it.

The stakes are high. If the effort succeeds, northern Wisconsin's dominant industries could enhance their access to the only transcontinental rail network in North America: Canadian National's lines stretch up from New Orleans and - splitting apart as they pass through Wisconsin - proceed to Vancouver on Canada's west coast and Halifax on its east coast.

Those deep-water shipping ports, in turn, potentially link Wisconsin with Asia, Europe and South America.
