SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 1, 2013 (RISI) -North American pulp and paper railroad freight for the week ending Jan. 26, 2013, was up 0.1% from a year ago at 9,456 carloads, the Association of American Railroads reported. Through four weeks of the year, pulp and paper carloads at 38,124 carloads was 0.3% higher than the same period of 2012.

Weekly US pulp and paper freight was up 4.4%, Canada dropped 7.4% and Mexico was 4.4% lower.

North American lumber and wood products freight in the week rose 5.7% from a year ago and through four weeks was 7.9% higher, AAR showed.

Primary forest products traffic was up 0.9% in the week and down 5.2% year-to-date.

Driven by declining coal shipments, total North American rail freight decreased 4.3% in the week and was 4.7% lower year-to-date. Year-to-date total rail traffic was down 7% in the US, 2.9% higher in Canada and 4.4% higher in Mexico.
