SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 4, 2010 (RISI) -Pulp and paper rail freight on North American railroads for the latest week ending Sept. 25 at 9,804 carloads was 8.9% higher than a year ago, the Assn of American Railroads reported.

Through 38 weeks of 2010, pulp and paper freight at 350,933 carloads was 0.1% above last year's levels. US traffic year-to-date is off 0.4% and Canadian volume is 1.2% higher.

Combined lumber and wood products freight for the week at 4,669 carloads was up 3.2% from last year and through 38 weeks at 180,411 carloads was 8.3% higher.

Primary forest products rail freight was down 8.1% in the week and 8.3% higher year-to-date.

Total North America rail freight for 19 commodities rose 11.1% in the week and was 9.9% higher year-to-date.
