North American forest products rail freight down 3.6% in week ending Aug. 8

OAKLAND, CA, Aug. 13, 2015 (RISI) -North American forest products rail freight was down 3.6% to 18,184 carloads in the latest week ending Aug. 8, the Assn of American Railroads reported. Volume through 31 weeks of 2015 at 581,483 was up 0.4% from 2014 with average week volume at 18,758 carloads.

US forest products freight in the week was 6.8% lower and year-to-date was down 2.1%. Canadian volume in the week was up 1.8% and year-to-date was 4.3% higher. Mexico was down 37.9% and 25.9% respectively.

Total North American carloads were down 5.5% in the week and 3.6% year-to-date, AAR reported.

Genesee and Wyoming reported its July pulp and paper rail freight was up 4% from 2014 to 15,577 carloads and lumber/forest products was up 0.3% to 11,674 carloads.

G&W noted its acquisitions of the Arkansas Midland Railroad, the Prescott & Northwestern Railroad and the Warren & Saline River Railroad contributed to lumber and forest products traffic.
