North American forest products rail freight 5.5% higher in latest week; G&W pulp and paper volume up in 1Q

OAKLAND, CA, April 15, 2015 (RISI) -North American forest products railroad freight was up 5.5% in the latest week ending Apr. 11, 2015, at 19,157 carloads, the Assn of American Railroads reported. Volume through 14 weeks of 2015 at 263,132 carloads was 4.2% higher.

In the week, US forest products freight was up 0.3%, Canada was 13.6% higher, and Mexico was up 38.7%. Year-to-date, US volume was off 0.1%, Canada was up 11.2%, and Mexico was 30.5% lower.

Total North America rail carloads were down 1.3% in the week and up 0.9% year-to-date.

Genesee & Wyoming reported its first quarter pulp and paper rail traffic was up 1.3% from a year ago to 42,765 carloads. In March, volume was 2.2% higher from a year ago.

G&W's lumber/forest products freight in the quarter was up 0.1% to 32,589 carloads, and in March was 1% higher. G&W's total carload traffic in the first quarter was 3.2% higher and in March was up 1%.
