OAKLAND, CA, Aug. 12, 2016 (RISI) -Genesee & Wyoming reported its North American pulp and paper rail freight in July was down 9.5% from a year ago to 14,094 carloads.
The company said the decrease was “primarily due to decreased shipments across most of G&W’s regions.”
Lumber & Forest Products freight in July was down 3.1% to 11,309 carloads. Total carloads were down 5.9% with coal down 8.7%.
The company reported its second quarter pulp and paper freight was down 9.2% from a year ago to 41,128 carloads due to truck competition and a plant consolidation following a merger. Freight revenue was 10% lower to $26 million with revenue per carload at $634 in the quarter.
For six months, pulp and paper freight was down 6.5% to 82,296 carloads. Pulp and paper accounted for 10.7% of G&W carloads in the six month period.
