SAO PAULO, Nov. 11, 2021 (Fastmarkets RISI) -Chilean group CMPC has developed boxboard packaging with a 100% compostable and biodegradable greaseproof barrier targeting plastic substitution in the fast food and delivery industries.
The product has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for direct contact with food and was named Natural Kraft.
CMPC has two boxboard mills in Chile with a combined capacity of 530,000 tonnes per year.
Despite the delivery and fast food markets still being relatively new for CMPC, it is a growing its business line, the company told Fastmarkets.
“We do expect this segment to keep on growing in the future, mainly driven by a change in consumer habits and plastic replacement mainly within the fast food and food service segment,” it said.
The new product has a functional barrier in its manufacturing provided by a third-party supplier and is capable of containing the permeation of oils and fats from foods such as sushi, hamburgers, sandwiches, salads and cakes, among others. The company is already selling it into the domestic market and exporting to several countries.
“Its recent FDA certification, for exposure and direct contact with food, opens a door to think of the product as an innovative alternative to replacing plastic. Additionally, this 100% recyclable product has certification for home and industrial composting,” the company said.
This packaging solution has been positioning itself as an environmentally friendly product, according to CMPC.
“Several local and global brands have decided to use it in their delivery logistics, helping the environment and delivering the same food quality without polluting,” the company said.
