BRUSSELS, (RISI) - Norske Skog has teamed up with the technology company Biométhodes, which develops second generation biorefining of non-food biomass, in order to build a biorefinery at its 600,000 tonne/yr Golbey newsprint mill in France.
The project is called BioSkog and will see the two firms study and construct first a pilot unit in 2016 and then a commercial-scale biorefinery at the site. The latter will have a planned processing capacity of some 40,000 tonnes/yr of biomass and will be operational by 2018.Read more

At a recent community stakeholder meeting, Sarah Barkowski, environment manager at the Powell River mill, reviewed air quality findings collected at several locations near the mill.
Barkowski first reviewed dust fall, which is a particulate that travels short distances. "It's considered a nuisance parameter. It is not considered a health parameter," she said.Read more
Fred Chinn, general manager of Catalyst's Powell River division, said in terms of productivity and costs, the mill faces challenges. Year-to-date, the amount of time that paper was being produced on the mill's three machines is as follows: No. 9, 82 per cent, No. 10, 80 per cent and No. 11, 85 per cent.Read more
South Korea's largest newsprint producer, Jeonju Paper, has decided to take further downtime in October at one of their mills in the country to deal with low market demand and dwindling profitability.
It is expected to result in a curtailment of 20,000 tonnes. The firm will use the downtime as an opportunity to carry out maintenance work.
Jeonju Paper will shut three paper machines at the Jeonju mill from October 5 to October 17.Read more
