GMUND AM TEGERNSEE, Germany, April 10, 2014 (Press Release) -
Gmund is official partner of the GreenTec Awards. In Munich on 4 May 2014, honours will be conferred on businesses and achievements that reduce the burden on the environment, encourage ecological sustainability, use resources sparingly and responsibly, and avoid and reduce toxins. Efficiency, technology and ecology are the focal points.
Thanks to its many years of commitment to environmentalism, Gmund pioneered ecological accountability in the paper industry. Gmund established the Environmental Charta in 2007, in which the mill voluntarily committed itself to upholding strict regulations for the paper industry's "four pillars". New technologies enabled the mill to reduce its water consumption by circa 70%.
Raw materials are exclusively sourced from guaranteed sustainable plantations where the natural environment and their workforce are treated with fairness and responsibility. Up to 75% of the energy needed for Gmund's paper production is produced by the mill itself: three water turbines, solar power and power-heat coupling from the manufacturing process contribute toward efficient energy production.
"GreenTec and Gmund go very well together. We share the approach to unite ecology and technology, and to encourage sustainable business practices. With our Environmental Charta, we have set standards in the paper industry and we continually invest in ecologically responsible manufacturing to improve even further in the future. We have manufactured papers at Gmund in Bavaria since 1829. We have cultivated our enthusiasm for environmental protection over many generations and we pass this enthusiasm and awareness along to our children so our business can continue to exist for the next 185 years and beyond", explains Gmund's CEO, the fourth- generation papermaker Florian Kohler.
As a juror for the GreenTec Awards, Florian Kohler had already proven his expertise and experience in sustainable projects in January. It will be exciting to see whom the jury will honour with the coveted awards for the best ecological performance. Circa 1,000 guests from the worlds of business, science, policymaking and the media will find out first when the winners walk the "Green Carpet" in Munich on 4 May 2014.
