Ontario makes new proposal to better protect woodland caribou

TORONTO, Jan. 24, 2011 (Press Release) -Ontario is proposing to protect woodland caribou habitat and protect economic growth in Northern Ontario.

Comments from all Ontarians, partners and industry are welcomed on the proposal. Meetings will also be held across Northern Ontario and with First Nation communities.

The McGuinty government is committed to protect woodland caribou and to ensure a healthy Northern economy and viable natural resource industries. Earlier this month, the province announced it intended to introduce forest tenure legislation that would, if passed, re-energize Ontario's forest sector by creating new jobs and attracting investment while ensuring Ontario's forests continue to be managed sustainably. Both these initiatives are important parts of the Open Ontario plan to create jobs and economic opportunity, and protect the environment.
