LEWISTON, ME, Oct. 23, 2020 (Maine Public) -The Maine Department of Environmental Protection says the ND Paper Mill in Old Town violated state and federal laws when it spilled more than 30,000 gallons of pulping chemicals into the Penobscot River earlier this month.
The spill of highly caustic chemicals resulted in the death of about 50 fish. DEP’s Brian Kavanah says these days, any fish kill is significant.
“We generally don’t see fish kills now so that’s an unusual circumstance,” he says.
