KNOXVILLE, TN, Feb. 25, 2010 (Knoxville News Sentinel ) -The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is demanding changes to a North Carolina paper mill's wastewater permit to improve water quality in the Pigeon River.

In a letter sent to North Carolina regulators, EPA's Region 4 office in Atlanta ordered the state to raise pollution standards for a paper mill in Canton, N.C., near where the Pigeon flows into Tennessee.

River advocates hailed the move as an important step in the continual improvement of water quality in the Pigeon.
