KNOXVILLE, TN, Aug. 17, 2010 (Knoxville News Sentinel ) -Cocke County has joined with a coalition of environmental groups to challenge a controversial wastewater permit issued to a North Carolina paper mill that discharges its waste into the Pigeon River.

The challenge filed last month in North Carolina will ultimately be heard by an administrative law judge who will have to decide if the permit granted to Blue Ridge Paper Products earlier this year by state regulators goes far enough in protecting water quality.

The challenge was filed by Cocke County and a slew of environmental groups who have agreed to pool their financial resources to fight the permit, according to Clean Water for North Carolina Executive Director Hope Taylor.
