COWICHAN, BC, Aug. 17, 2010 (Local News) -Crofton pulp mill is the only local industry affected by B.C.'s planned cap-and-trade program aimed at reducing greenhouse-gas emissions linked to climate change, the environment ministry says.

But the pulp-and-paper mill could be seven years ahead in cutting its carbon emissions before Victoria's cap-and-trade system takes effect on Jan. 1, 2012, a Catalyst agent explained.

Still, Cowichan's NDP MLA Bill Routley, and Carbon Buster Peter Nix, are dubious about the Liberals' goal of corking a third of B.C.'s greenhouse gases by 2020 as part of the Western Climate Initiative.
