MILTON KEYNES, UK, Jan. 8, 2019 (Press Release) -International waste-to-product company, Renewi plc has won a contract to operate four large container parks for the Belgian Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Renewi will monitor the waste flows at the container parks to maximise recycling efficiency and ensure they remain safe, clean and tidy. The Renewi team will also advise customers on the correct sorting and disposal of waste, including ensuring that any hazardous materials are correctly grouped and labelled.

Renewi has been working with the Belgian MoD since 2014 when it was selected to collect and process the waste from five of the nine barrack clusters following a public tender. Under this contract, Renewi collects containers containing a variety of waste, including hazardous materials.

Over the first 10 months of last year Renewi collected over 4,000 tonnes of waste for recycling from the Ministry of Defence, including over 3,000 tonnes of residual waste, 500 tonnes of paper and cardboard and almost 200 tonnes of construction and demolition waste.

The new contract at the four container parks, located in Evere, Peutie, Kleine Brogel and Brasschaat, will run until the end of 2020. Outsourcing the operation of these parks to Renewi will allow the MoD to free up its own employees for other core tasks.

Gino Commerman, Materiel Manager for ‘Waste’ at the Ministry of Defence said:

“Alongside the traditional service linked to collecting and processing of all kinds of waste, we particularly appreciated the flexibility that characterises Renewi’s service. At the Ministry of Defence, we are regularly confronted with very specific waste challenges, as was the case at a major site in Lombardsijde where the sandy ground had been contaminated by the lead from bullets. We can count on Renewi to work with us to come up with a solution to such problems that fits in with our strict procedures.”

Wim Geens, Managing Director of Renewi’s Commercial Waste Belgium Division said:

“The Ministry of Defence can count on us to incorporate the management of the container parks within our existing service and to provide solutions to their specific waste challenges. With our unrivalled range of innovative waste-management services, we are a particularly attractive partner for our customers. Our aim is to be the leading waste-to-product business and we are realising this ambition together with customers such as the Ministry of Defence.”
