LONDON, Jan. 13, 2021 (Press Release) -The average person living in Belgium, The Netherlands or Luxembourg will throw away 41 pizza boxes, 54 drinks cans and 37 burger and fries cartons each year – with 23 percent of those from Benelux claiming to be unsure about what they can and can’t recycle, a new study has revealed.

The research found that over a third (35 percent) of adults across Benelux said takeaway packaging was too messy to clean and that one in four (23 percent) cannot be bothered to rinse and sort it into the correct recycling bins. Of the 753 adults polled, 14 percent said fast-food packaging was what they hated recycling the most, while 45 percent said they recycle everything they can.

The survey commissioned by Pro Carton, the European Association of Carton and Cartonboard manufacturers found that 24 percent of adults from Benelux admit they very rarely bother recycling the packaging that their food comes in and on average each person throws away 256 takeaway wrappers, boxes and cartons every year. 46 percent of people from Benelux think fast-food establishments should be made to use recyclable packaging, without noting any concern about price increase.

General Manager Tony Hitchin of Pro Carton said: “With takeaways on the rise due to lockdowns in 2020, this research provides food for thought for brands looking to reduce the environmental impact of the packaging they choose - most adults from Benelux (91%) said they would like to see more sustainable takeaway packaging. More and more takeaway containers are now being made out of cartonboard, from French fries scoops and burger trays to noodle bowls, so more takeaway packaging can, and should, be recycled than ever before.

“We know that cardboard/cartonboard is the consumers’ preferred packaging format so we want to see even more fast food operators adopting more environmentally-friendly packaging containers and the general public helping out by recycling them, especially when eating out of home,” concluded Hitchin.
