KARUR, India, June 17, 2013 (Local News) -About 25 villages on the banks of the Cauvery in Karur are pitted against Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd (TNPL) at Kagithapuram, alleging that the company is drawing water from the riverbed. Villagers distressed by acute water crisis blame TNPL for depriving them off drinking water. TNPL's paper production too is severely hit due to water shortage.

Usually, TNPL manages to overcome water crisis by taking water from the Mettur dam on Cauvery. The river water reaches a well in Kattipalayam from where the water is pumped to the TNPL factory.
