JAKARTA, Feb. 6, 2019 (Press Release) -Consumers have made it clear the top two priorities in packaging are strength and sustainability, with the latter on the rise. Forty-two percent of consumers cite sustainability as the most important aspect of packaging, second only to strength at 72 percent. As consumers note the increasing value they’re placing on eco-friendly practices, brands are starting to acknowledge that neither quality nor sustainability can be treated as an afterthought.
According to consumers, excessive packaging is one of the primary issues impacting sustainable behavior among retailers. Those industries that shoppers believe are lagging behind include toys and beauty / hygiene products are the biggest offenders.
The 2018 Consumer Trends Report found 55 percent of consumers find toys contain more packaging than necessary, followed by beauty / hygiene products at 40 percent, household goods at 37 percent, groceries at 32 percent and clothing at 18 percent.
“As sustainable packaging continues to gain momentum as a priority for consumers, it’s critical that quality and functionality are not forgotten,” said Ian Lifshitz, vice president of sustainability and stakeholder relations, APP. “Our approach towards R&D and investing in award-winning products like Foopak Bio Natura Compostable Food Packaging Solution, ensures both – we can deliver a truly sustainable product without any comprise to the marketplace requirements.”
The study was fielded using Engine’s twice-weekly Online CARAVAN Omnibus Survey. Respondents were members of an online panel and had agreed to participate in online surveys and polls. As such, no estimates of sampling error can be calculated. Completed interviews are weighted by five variables – age, sex, geographic region, race and education – using data from the U.S. Census Bureau to help ensure reliable and accurate representation of the total U.S. population, 18 years of age and older. The online survey was fielded between August 16-19, 2018, polling 1,003 U.S. adults ages 18 and older.
