Call for Florida wastewater plants to have federal EPA oversight of St. John’s river, including GP mill

JACKSONVILLE, FL, May 29, 2018 (Florida Times-Union ) -State officials repeatedly downplayed violations of pollution permits at Northeast Florida wastewater treatment plants that affect the St. Johns River, a whistle-blower group is telling the federal government.

Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) is asking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to take over enforcement of permit rules at a half-dozen facilities in Duval, Clay and Putnam counties.

In letters to the EPA, the group points to stacks of old reports by Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection to argue the state “dragged its heels and ultimately allowed violations of substantial gravity to go entirely un-penalized.”
