SPREMBERG, Germany, May 23, 2013 (Press Release) -After 26 months of construction and a successfully concluded test drive of all facilities, the new built refuse derived fuel (RDF)-heating plant of Hamburger Rieger in the industrial estate "Schwarze Pumpe" in Spremberg (Germany) is officially being put into operation today. The new power plant has a total power of 110 megawatt thermal and creates a further 52 jobs in the region. The large-scale investment of 140 million Euro will secure the paper production site at Schwarze Pumpe on a long-term basis. The heating plant has been built using latest standard of technology and will supply the power demand of the Hamburger Rieger paper and containerboard production plant in Spremberg. Furthermore, the new plant will feed approximately 17 megawatt of power into the public network.
Official Opening with Representatives from Politics and Industry
On May 23rd, 2013, State Secretary Henning Heidemanns from the Ministry for Economic and European Affairs and Spree-Neiße-District-Administrator Harald Altekrüger, together with the proprietors Thomas Prinzhorn and Cord Prinzhorn and with Uwe Amann, manager and project head of Spreerecycling, officially started the operations of the new RDF-heating plant of Spreerecycling GmbH Co. KG.
The plant's construction started in December 2009. After the approval of the plant, the first steps for setting up the construction site were carried out. In 2010, the actual civil engineering works started. The first firing of RDF started the plant's test run on December 1st, 2012. The plant consists of a single-line grate-firing with a thermal output of 110 megawatt. Due to the cogeneration of heat and power with the paper factory, a high efficiency of far more than 60 % is ensured. Processed commercial and urban waste as well as the waste residues from the paper production will be used as fuels.
New Power Plant Will Secure Industry Interest in the Region
„With the new power plant, we will be able to reach the important targets of future energy efficiency and sustainability. Recycling is a key pillar of our company: In the Prinzhorn Group, we already recycle more than 1.7 million tons of waste paper to new packaging products. In doing so, we cover an important aspect of recycling management in industry. Using those wastes that can't be further recycled as source of power and heat for our production plants, by employing highly efficient incineration technologies, is perfectly in line with our business strategy", says Cord Prinzhorn, CFO of Prinzhorn Holding, in the course of the opening ceremony.
Simultaneously with the opening ceremony, already 100,000 tons of RDF in the above mentioned composition have been incinerated. An average of 17 megawatt of the produced energy is being fed into the public network. Since December 2012, the RDF-power plant has supplied the paper machine of Hamburger Rieger in Spremberg with approximately 75 tons of process steam per hour. During the months of the test mode since early 2013, all approved threshold values have been safely met. The availability of the 255,000 tons of RDF required for the annual operation of the power plant, is fully ensured. The paper production plant will contribute approximately 45,000 tons of RDF. The additionally required external amounts will be obtained from more than 60 fuel suppliers.
„Investing into the new power plant is a further step in order to secure the operation in Spremberg on a long term basis, positioning the production to be fully competitive on the market. Already in 2012, we have extended the product portfolio of the Paper Machine I in Spremberg by means of investing in a coating plant, so that technical restrictions for the production of coated and uncoated white containerboard no longer exist. In doing so, our group of companies could further expand its market leadership regarding white coated and uncoated liners", explained Harald Ganster, head of the Hamburger Containerboard Division. The site in Spremberg that has been developed by Hamburger Rieger since 2004 currently employs 460 people - in paper production, containerboard production and in the newly built RDF power plant.
The power plant is situated in the north of the industrial estate Schwarze Pumpe and has been constructed by a number of well-known suppliers from the power plant and building sector. The planning and construction period was characterised by the excellent cooperation of all involved parties. By means of already implemented and further measures regarding accessibility in terms of traffic, additional strains for the residents could be reduced during the building phase.
