ST. JOHN'S NF, June 11, 2014 (Press Release) -The mill was shut down and the effluent flow from the pipeline stopped. Part of the investigation includes determining the source of the spill and how much untreated effluent went into the environment. The department has also hired Strum Engineering to conduct independent tests.
"Our first priority is to protect the health of residents and the environment," said Environment Minister Randy Delorey. "Staff are focused on identifying what damage has been done, and what Northern Pulp will need to do to clean up the spill."
Environment Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans are also investigating, and Northern Pulp has hired Stantec Consulting to develop a plan for cleaning up the spill.
