The investment planned by Europac for this facility until 2018 is up to 35 million euros..
- The Minister for Development and Environment of the Government of Castile and Leon, Juan Carlos Suarez-Quiñones, visited the factory to learn about the company's projects.
- The objective of Europac is to improve its offer to customers and to strengthen its position in markets with the greatest potential for profitable growth
- The paper factory will reinforce its position as a leader in the range of production of recycled white and coated paper of high added value.
- The factory will also improve its capacity for high quality printing and increase production capacity by 32%
- Investments will be defined in the strategic objectives for profitability and debt reduction planned for 2015-2018
The visit was also attended by the president of the Provincial Government of Palencia, Ángeles Armisén, the representative of Palencia Council, Luis Domingo González and the Director General for Environmental Quality of the Council, José Manuel Jimenez.
The 35 million to be invested by the company in Dueñas will mainly be directed towards the development of new paper products for high-added value packaging, the optimisation and improvement of the current paper range, the update of facilities and the development of latest technologies, as well as an increase in overall efficiency and production capacity. The company also has the double objective of improving its offer to customers and strengthening its position in markets with the greatest potential for profitable growth.
As José Miguel Isidro explained to the Minister for Development and Environment, "the planned investments reinforce our commitment to Castile and Leon and they guarantee the sustainability of a project that will make the Dueñas factory into a market leader in the development of coated paper and high-added value packaging solutions".These projects, as stated by the company director, "form part of the measures intended to increase profitability, in accordance with the strategic objectives for 2015-2018".
In the Paper Division, the most important project is the third and final phase of the Proyecto Estucados (Coating Project). Following the launch of simple coated paper in 2013 and the standardisation of the two paper machine widths in 2015, the project will conclude with the production of double layer coated paper. The Dueñas factory will be the only manufacturer in southern Europe and the third in the entire continent to produce this quality of paper, intended for the production of corrugated board packaging which demands the highest print quality.
In line with the increasing market demand of this kind of packaging, the Packaging Division will continue to work on the development of digital printing, a technology which the Dueñas factory is pioneering since it began collaborating with Hewlett Packard over a year ago. In fact, the Europac Group, through its factory in Palencia, is one of five companies in the world that, together with the global leader in printing, form part of the development project for digital printing on corrugated board.
In addition, it will make a number of investments into improving the overall efficiency of the facility and the quality of printing. This includes the optimisation of the corrugated line and the development of a smart warehouse for intermediary product, as well as the installation of a new high-quality hexachrome printer.
Lastly, the planned investments will increase production capacity of the packaging factory by 32%, making the Palencia facility into one of the market leaders in high-quality printing.
Dedicated dumping site
In terms of the environment, Europac will invest a total of 2.5 million euros to modify its Wastewater Treatment Plant (EDAR) and adapt it to the new European environmental standard which will come into force in 2018. José Miguel Isidro also told the Minister for Development and Environment of the Government of Castile and Leon of his desire to construct a dedicated dumping site in order to optimise the management of waste throughout the whole facility.
Here it is important to note that the only waste sent to the dumping site by the Dueñas factory is plastic, wire and general foreign materials that come in the bundles of recovered paper, the raw material for manufacturing paper. It should also be noted that this facility recovers and consumes 250,000 tonnes of paper per year, which is not sent to the dumping site.
