The cornerstone of Tullis Russell's environmental plans, the new CHP plant, uses almost entirely recycled wood as its fuel source. It will not only reduce Tullis Russell's fossil-fuel carbon dioxide emissions by 250,000 tonnes per annum, it will also feed directly into the local grid making a major contribution to Scotland's renewable energy generation targets.
The plant's completion will also tie in with the opening of the Tullis Russell Environmental Education Centre (T.R.E.E.), an exciting project borne out of the company's strategy to think beyond its core business and consider its wider responsibilities to the community. Recognising the enormous importance of sustainability and protection of the environment, Tullis Russell developed the idea in collaboration with three local community councils and ambitiously set about building the Centre. With learning at its core, The T.R.E.E Centre aims to motivate the local community to embrace sustainability in all its forms. As well as being an important local educational resource, the centre aims to stimulate discussion about all aspects of sustainability.
The T.R.E.E. Centre, which will be run as an independent company, has been built using the most modern eco-friendly methods and will emit 92% less CO2 than an equivalent conventionally constructed building. The $1.6M project was funded by The Russell Trust, Tullis Russell itself and the UK's Climate Challenge Fund, The Centre will open in the summer 2013.
In product development the Scottish based board producer is not standing still either. At this year's Luxe Pack exhibition in New York the company will show the latest edition to its premium SBS cartonboard range Trucard which was developed in response to increased demand from brand holders for a superior level of whiteness in coated board. Trucard bright white comes complete with all the Trucard print performance and environmental attributes associated with the brand; but with the option of a new brighter whiter shade that produces stronger vibrant colour reproduction and imagery with real impact.
